As Jim explained, Spock is the caretaker of Sol and Merrin while we serve aboard the Enterprise. Our purpose in coming to New Vulcan was to introduce you to the children.

I did not know your existence and you did not know mine. My hostility is as natural as breathing. And you not knowing me makes me wonder what else they have left out. Or perhaps I am just that shameful part of their lives?

Of course you are not. I had mentioned to you of Spock's existence in the past, though I had not done so now because you were upset at the existence of the children. If I had informed you that Spock was their caretaker, I feared that you would refuse to come at all.
